Unicef: Every fifth baby is born in a conflict area

29 million children were born last year in a crisis area. Malnutrition, anxiety and aggressiveness among babies are some of the consequences.

More than 29 million babies were born in crisis areas last year, according to the UN Children's Fund Unicef. In countries such as Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria, South Sudan or Yemen, every fifth baby has spent the first part of his life worldwide, Unicef ??said.

As a child, living in chaos, conflict, insecurity and stress often causes the babies to be malnourished and frightened. They also cried a lot, slept badly or became aggressive.

"Besides the obvious direct dangers, the long-term consequences of such a launch into life can be catastrophic"; UNICEF boss Henrietta Fore said. "What these families need is peace - but by then they desperately need more support to deal with the devastation around them - 29 million new lives and their future depend on it."
