Ankara (AP) - The US has surprisingly announced a ceasefire in the northern Syrian conflict. Turkey has pledged to halt its military operation against Kurdish militias for five days, US Vice President Mike Pence said after talks in Ankara. Turkey does not want to see the suspension of the fighting as a "ceasefire". The offensive will not be stopped, but "interrupted," said Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu. The Turkish mission had met with international criticism. Before the start of the offensive, US President Donald Trump had ordered a US troop withdrawal from the border area.
